LESSON 63: TEXT MESSAGES

Now we focus on ideology - the idea that media products carry with them ideas about the world they are released into. By definition, each media product will reflect the world that spawned it - a good example might be the use of 'bad' language in current media products compared to 40 years ago.
Such surface features are obvious and, though we do need to consider these, those targeting higher levels of understanding [and grades] are required to dig deeper to identify the elements of the values and beliefs that media products carry of the social world they are consumed within.

We know that all products are constructed with the idea of an intended audience

We know that such products contain ideas [ways of seeing the world] that comply with the ideas [values; beliefs] of that audience

That those ideas define the narrative - the way in which the 'story' is revealed. this can be seen in the representations offered, the tone of the narrative etc.
